Presbytery of Ohio Valley Partnership with
International Center of Bethlehem

Archived 10 February 2010

In 2004 Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb, Director of the International Center of Bethlehem, extended an invitation to the Presbytery of Ohio Valley to “Come and see” the work of the Center. In January 2006, 13 people from the Presbytery of Ohio Valley accepted Mitri Raheb’s invitation and traveled to Bethlehem. Returning home, the travelers designed a proposal for presbytery to partner with the International Center of Bethlehem.

In August, 2006, the Presbytery of the Ohio Valley voted to affirm a partnership with the International Center of Bethlehem. The Partnership includes: Scholar Dollars for the students of Dar Al Kalima School, Travel Opportunities, Support for the Churches for Middle East Peace, Gathering and sending Hearing Aids for patients in Bethlehem, Teaching/learning of the work of the International Center of Bethlehem, Praying for each other, Developing a pen pal ministry, Engaging with ministry to elders.

PARTNERSHIP ACTIVITES AS OF AUGUST 2009:

SCHOLAR DOLLARS
$28,000.00 + in Scholarship Dollars has been sent from Congregations, Individuals and Sunday School Classes. The cost of one year of schooling at Dar Al Kalima School is $2,000.00, and families pay $750.00. A gift of $1250.00, affords schooling for a student for one year. The school has 250 students, K-12, with class size limited to 25. Creativity and creative response to conflict are important teaching tools in the school. Since 2006, construction of Dar Al Kalima College has begun. The Bethlehem Travelers of 2009 will have the opportunity to follow the progress of this additional work. You can also follow it at: www.annadwa.org.

TEACHING/LEARNING ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF BETHLEHEM
Rana Khoury, staff person of the International Center of Bethlehem traveled throughout the Presbytery in November 2008. Rana had the opportunity to speak in seven locations, telling the stories of the work in Bethlehem. Rana is Vice President for Development and Outreach for the International Center. Further, forty-five presentations have been made by the 2006 Bethlehem Travelers, telling of life and work in Bethlehem today.

HEARING AIDS
Five batches of hearing aids have been sent to Bethlehem, reconnecting patients with the world around them. Peace Notes carried an article about this project, and the Mission Yearbook contains the story of this work. (May 19, 2009) As a result of these articles, hearing aids have arrived from California to Connecticut and from Florida to Oregon.

CHURCHES FOR MIDDLE EAST PEACE
One of the 2006 Travelers participated in 2008 and 2009 gatherings of the Churches for Middle East Peace, in Washington, D.C.

International Center of Bethlehem-POV Partnership

Archived 8 September 2009

Friends--

All of us are concerned about the the human suffering in the middle east. The attached information will guide our prayers.

This information came from Doug Dick, the PCUSA person in Ammon Jordan. Mitri Raheb is pastor of Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem and head of the International Center of Bethlehem. The Presbytery of Ohio Valley is partnered with the work of the International Center of Bethlehem. Mitri has spoken in the Presbytery, at the General Assembly, and hosted the 13 Bethlehem Travelers in 2006. As news from Gaza is plentiful, the voice of Mitri Raheb is one important one. Our prayers and our work continue to be centered in "that all might have life and have it abundantly." That is the work of the International Center of Bethlehem and the work of the Presbytery of Ohio Valley.

Mileage Rate Change

Archived 12 February 2009

Note to churches that reimburse pastors and other church workers for mileage: there is a small decrease in the IRS allowed reimbursable rate. In 2009 the rate will be 55˘ per mile. It has been 58.5˘ per mile for the last half of 2008. Our presbytery recommends reimbursing guest preachers, pastors and other church workers at the IRS rate, so Sessions and church treasurers would want to know of the adjustment.

A Financial Plan for Flood Relief - 12 June 2008

Prayer after the flooding:

Holy and Grace Filled God, we are people who even in the midst of great distress and sadness are grateful. We are grateful for your presence that is with us in all times. We are grateful for our friends and families, people who have come to our rescue. We are grateful that great numbers of lives were not lost in the midst of this scary tragedy. We are grateful that each day we see our community working together to recover. But, Loving God, you know that many of us in our hearts and our spirits are hurting. Many of us are experiencing feelings of loss and despair. Some of us are still in various stages of shock – oh how we need to be comforted. Please send lots and lots of loving faces and arms to hold us with your love until we feel less vulnerable. We trust that you will lead us once again to places of wholeness and healing. Amen.

Prayer written by Peggy Casteel, Associate Pastor, Columbus, First
